Split Rock Lighthouse

Most over-photographed spot in Minnesota? Maybe. Sue me.

Was supposed to be the day the full moon rises behind the lighthouse. Obviously clouds did not play along.

It might be over-photographed, but what isn't in this world now a days! I like the shot and how it's composed. Nice details in the rocks and lighthouse.

I have only seen Split Rock once and there's been a bit of time gone by since then, but I remember a little more color to the cliff face, and in attempting to get that, I discovered a far richer sky than you presented...well, at least in my humble opinion - be it ever so humble.

Just like the many lighthouses that dot the Maine coast. I don't even bother taking photos because every tourist has taken the same shot 100 times over.

But that isn't saying there aren't still good photos to be had!

Care to share what you did here? Lots of ways to cook it but that does look good.

I reset the black and white point and added a gray point in the curves dialogue, boosting just slightly. I am pretty sure I used the snow shadow at the base on the right side where that little area slants downward. The curve adjustment tool is a wonderful tool but as you noted, there are lots of ways to "cook" an image and you can really ding a pretty shot if you get heavy handed with this adjustment.

It may overphotographed and used in almost every Minnesota State Park or tourist publication but what makes it unique is that you took the photograph and are happy with it. I haven't been back there since I had my film camera but it's on the list of things I want to shoot with my DSLR when I get back to the north shore someday.

Nice photo! I was just there yesterday, posted a shot of it in the nature/wildlife section, it seemed surreal with all the fresh snow and lack of tourists.
