I went there in 1986 to photograph the Walla Walla Stampede hot air balloon festival. Gorgeous landscapes abound there.

What's remarkable (to me at least) about the area is the amazing contrasts in a relatively small area. If one does a 180 from the vantage point in the first three images above, the light can make things look like some sort of impressionist painting, e.g.

Or a half hour's drive can put you in serious "old west" scenery, like Palouse Falls...
