Who knows? Maybe all the buildings on St Peter's Square HAVE those halos! I've never been. So I can't know. But it being the Vatican and all that...!?!?!?

yeah the halos are from tonemapping the image to bring out more details. Unfortunately the halos ruin it for me too.
