Love the shapes and lines, but the vig is way too strong for me ... For me it always seems best if it's barely detectable

No, no, no.
There are two centers of interest, neither of which are attractive and they are connected.
These aren't attractive or interesting, just beaten up with pping.
They aren't unusual or original - just overdone.

This looks like some part of the rigging for a drag or trawl net...but no matter what it is, the vignetting looks very obvious and ugly...the image in the vignetted area has "dropped off" of any type of realistic tonality for the scene...the processing looks very labored, and these rings and their rigging, and the seaweed are pretty ugly. I'm not fond of these photos for a number of reasons...these shots just are not engaging for me.
