Do you know any photographers that do/have done classic "still life" like images? I was looking at some paintings today and began to wonder how often this has been done with film. here are a couple images I took just now. C and C most welcome.

For photographic still life check out Edward Weston, who did a lot of that sort of thing. Robert Mapplethorpe did some great flower still lifes and also some sculpture photography (if that counts as still life), in addition to the more controversial stuff he's mostly known for. A Czech photographer named Josef Sudek also did some still life, in addition to other interesting work.

The images you posted are centered and not that interesting compositionally, although the color is good and the exposure, except for a couple of hot spots in the first one. Get some more fruit and keep working!

Search Flickr for Still Life.

That will give you an idea of how often it is done.

I'd personally make sure the dish was clean before photographing a still life using said dish.

Haha I kinda liked the dirty dish, the colors already looked really nice so some dirt was fun for me. :D

looks too cluttered for me. the design in the plate and in the background make it hard to focus my attention on the fruit

In response to the too centered comment, is this any better? I am quite new to using digital cameras and editing images, so cropping is still sort of touch and go with me.

The first is a better composition than what you had although still a little empty with just the one fruit, but the second cuts off part of the orange. The best thing to do is get more fruit and make the fruit arrangement asymmetric.
