Straight dumb question

on TV or sport events I always see photographers with like gray lens that turns into black then back to gray.. are these all tele converters with a lens or are some lens made like that?

The black parts are usually the focus/zoom rings on white Canon tele lenses.

On that one the light part looks like a lens hood.

The ones you usually see are Canon telephoto lenses, like this one here:

Many also wrap their lenses - lenscoat make a range of neoprine covers in various shades as do a few other companies; some even wrap them in logos of their company (often then its the company lens not their own) or even ducttape .
