Saw this strange mushroom today. The layered base is peculiar. What is it?

Probably hallucinogenic but then could be toxic, too.
Any Mycologists on deck?

Very odd ... :onthego:

Would be interesting to know whether this is the final stage of growth, or will it blossom into something more familiar. As it is, it kinda looks like a pawn from a giant chess game.

I'll try to get another pic if a squirrel doesn't eat it. It is on a bicycle trail three miles into the woods.

Apparently its a

Amanita virgineoides

Fungus season is about to start in UK.

I googled Amanita virgineoides which popped up a picture of another mushroom, Amanita Abrupta, which has the strange layered bottom. That maybe it. I saw it this morning and it has not changed yet.

I seem to see a veil protruding from beneath the cap. I think it will open, like most Amanitas. And, most are toxic. Great shot!

The wiki link said it will open up and become flat.

Update: Unfortunately, someone picked the mushroom this morning.
