A small trio in Nice , France . Just happened to get him as he was breaking for a smoke .

Ok here is one for Derrel with bass included!

He doesn't stand out much from his background, and the members behind him are a bit distracting.
Next time try a longer focal length or a wider aperture to get a shallower depth of field. I also think stepping to the left could have helped to get that drum player out from right behind him.
You could also go in photoshop/Lightroom and slightly burn the background and maybe reduce some sharpness/clarity and/or put an inverted high pass filter.
That can add a faux-focus, I did it to plenty of my pictures back in the day.
Just don't overdo it, should you take that approach, haha.

I think it has a lot of interesting things going on. I love all the colors and it was a great moment to capture. I don't agree that the background being burned or blurred will help. I actually like the background as there are lots of things going on that add context to the photo. In my opinion the only reason the point of focus doesn't grab our attention is you can't see his eyes, and there's not a whole lot you can do about that unless you wanted to capture a different moment. Perhaps him taking a drag off the cigarette and looking up would've worked. Either way good capture.

I agree ,I would have liked to have used a wider aperture but I was just walking through when he lit up so I had to snap with whatever settings I had or would have missed it completely .

I was using A fuji x100s which does have a fixed focal length lens and my back was already plastered against a store front . These alleys in Nice can get awfully tight in places .

I am not really schooled all that well in the faux-blured thing , whenever I have tried it has been a total mess ! HAHAH . Thanks for taking the time to look and critique .

But a fuji x100s, you say? How do you like that? I've been really wanting to try one lately!
I'm not too into street photography, though, more into portraiture.
How do you think it'd hold up in a studio?

I'll tell you something ... This is one heck of a little camera . LOVE < LOVE <LOVE it . Crazy flash synch speeds , Would not hesitate to push 1600 ISO , just all around great camera . Would not hesitate to buy !

The position of the man who lights his cigarette is interesting, but I would like to see his eyes - just on the border of the hat! The main problem is the position of the two others guys, especially the one behind the guitarist.

that giant, RED upright bass?With the bass player right on the edge of the frame, and looking OUT of the frame? Man...that just KILLS this image. Utterly ruins any impact it might have had. The second guy, the drummer, with the white hat, also pointing to the left...he does not help either. The sheer size of that bright, shiny RED upright bass is killing the background. The fact that a guy is lighting up a cigarette that is 1/10,000 the size of the upright bass means very little to a viewer like me who was not there. THis scene is mostly about a guy who plays a red bass, and his drummer.
