This is an interesting subject but, IMO, the light is dull and the composition is not interesting. Fill the frame or go for negative space - either way go for it.

I only have my phone right now but if it were me I’d take this somewhere like this:

Yes, that makes a rather different picture. But for me, the more untraditionally, slightly ugly mix is more interesting than a nicer close up.

Yes I agree that it is very dark. After checking the meaning of 'dismal' I agree with that too.

I took it as you were trying to convey a mood more than to present a good, bright picture of a flower. I'd say it sets a dark mood with the dark background and dark purple but I'd also say it obviously sets the mood to criticize. Sorry about your luck.
