Stupid Things That Cameras do

I had to vent a bit.........
I had been photographing small birds so I put my camera on silent, they are easily spooked.

Next day I was trying to catch some water drops using High Speed Sync. The flash would not fire. Almost at the point of sending the flash to be repaired I had another look online and buried in a reddit post someone noted that Nikon Z8 flash does not work if silent shutter is enabled. This is the most utterly stupid restriction I have ever seen. The Z8 does not even have an actual shutter, THE NOISE IS ARTIFICIALLY GENERATED.

And dont get me started on Focus Shifting...

Interesting. Perhaps the manufacturer feels that if silent shutter is being used then you probably won't want to scare your subject with a flash either?

LOL! You must have a Nikon. I searched for days to find the solution to this same problem, until someone on a forum pointed me to the silent shutter nonsense.

As a wildlife photographer, I shoot in silent mode all the time ..

Did you put the sound of the shutter on aswel?

Try setting the volume on 11 !

The plethora of options for shutter sound is actually totally over the top.
For my little experiment above the camera was making a sound similar to a steam hammer hitting a giant bell and did not bother the birds either.
The sound of the sensor shield flipping open sends the birds into a panic. The sound of the camera strap hitting the camera also scares them.
Go figure ??????
