Succulents for C&C

[Tight Knot]

Hi all,

Here are a few cacti and flowers that I macro'd with a Canon 100mm 2.8, and extensions tubes.

Number 1 needed to be stacked (4 total photographs) as even with the highest F-stop, I still did not have enough depth of field.
The flowers were +- 1cm x 1/2cm.
Let me know what you think.

I like #2, it gives that effect of infinity in the middle. The others don't really do anything for me, not that they aren't good pictures.

I like the first, but would crop and put the center of the cactus further off center - lower right to crop out the big gray spot in that corner.

Are these plants you have growing yourself? I don't remember any cacti when I was in Israel, and we covered Ein Gedi up to northeast of Galilee (not sure if we made it as far as Katsrin), and then over to Caesarea Maritima.

I specifically left the blob in the right corner to show how well the layers stacked, you can see the fine hairs of the "blob" all the way to the center sharply.

As far as the image goes, I agree, a little tighter crop with the "blob" removed would look better.
Here are 2 crops, one with the Golden Ratio and the other with the Golden Spiral. Both have been "shopped" to remove thorn growths if the were cut in the middle by an outside edge.
Which do you think is better?

These plants are my neighbours, and now that you mention it, you are correct, I don't ever remember seeing cacti here other than the fruit bearing "prickly pear" variety. How long ago were you in Israel?

Seeing the two together, #1 for me. I think having the one extra spine clump at the top frames it all up nicely. I really like that shot.

I was in Israel as part of a school trip in January of 1999 if I remember right. We had a week of working at the Ein Gedi dig site, a couple of days in Galilee, and not quite a week staying in Old City Jerusalem. It was a great trip. From my perspective - it's too bad there is so much conflict there. I think it keeps a lot of people from seeing Israel. They are missing a lot.
