Summer's Last Stand

I took this photo on a day that felt like the true end of summer. Convective clouds are invading the Bay Area, as the moisture from the Hawaiian Islands begins to be funneled towards California's north coast - a sure sign that the season is changing. But the sun is still strong, and won't give up the fight for moisture so easily. This day felt like a turning point, ripe for a regime change, with unanimous yearning for the sun to release its stranglehold on the landscape.

I love your commentary, as much as the photo. There is, generally, a specific DAY when I go out and realize, that's it, summer's over. It might get warm again, as it has this week (nearly 80 today, woohoo!), it might be pretty and sunshiny and you might be able to wear flip-flops--but SUMMER has ended. It's never ON the last official day of summer--it's an intangible thing that you can't really quite quantify, or at least I can't, it just HAPPENS one day as you take everything in. The trees, the grass, the sun, the breeze, maybe that little "nip" in the air--and suddenly you know, a new season has entered.

It tends to give me a uneasy sense of melancholy (because there are no adequate words to express how much I. Hate. Winter.), and your photo gives me a very similar sensation.

Luckily for me--IF I manage to survive ONE more season of cold and drab and gray and winter all around--the same thing happens in the spring. Usually well before spring "officially" arrives, and well after the first jonquils pop up through the snow and frost-covered grounds. That moment, when I KNOW, I can sense, Spring is Coming, the shift has happened--that's the best day of the year for me! I can take more cold snaps, even another snow, because I KNOW, Winter has lost and Spring is Coming.

Can you tell I've been thinking A LOT about this whole change-of-seasons thing lately? :lmao:
I am seriously dreading this coming winter....just don't know if I can get through one more, or if it's time to just sail south to Half Moon Cay and make my living selling photos to tourists.
