Sun sets on the farm

I pass this broken old barn nearly every day on my way to and from work. Its one of those locations I scope everyday but rarely stop at. Could not resist today with the snow and the nice orange sky. Was a little rushed as not much room to pull off on a busy road but thought this captured the scene accurately. C&C welcome, hope you enjoy...

Nice! Without the sunset it would have been nothing. But with the sunset, it became something amazing. I'm glad you stopped to shoot it.

Awesome. Did you selectively saturate the sunset colours a bit?

Thanks batmura. I did some minor saturation and luminance adjustments in LR, then dodged the barn and burned the treeline in photoshop.

I really like the shot, but the roof of the barn seems a bit odd... I think it was the dodging, but there seems to be some shadows on the snow that seem surreal (I don't feel that adds to the photo). But, even so, I do like the shot!

Yeah I know what you mean. It was definitely the dodging and it does sorta look out of place. I was torn to leave it like that or not. A part of me likes how it makes the barn pop and the other part makes me think it looks fake. I'm still relatively new to actually using photoshop for more than dust spot removal, so still learning this other stuff.

Well, what can I say; even though I still think there is a little more potential to squeeze out of this photo (because of the afore mentioned dodge and burn), you still deserve a nomination for photo of the month, so I have added you up there.

Went back and did some editing to the roof. This look any better? I still think it pops but it also evenly lit ?

Nice contrast between the sunset and the snowy barn. I agree with others that the roof looks odd. My theory of sliders is that it's OK to use them as long as the viewer doesn't realize you have used them and won't ask if you PS'd it. If the viewer scratches their head and thinks something is up, you've gone too far. Go easy on the sliders.

The second shot correction is too white. Also, it doesn't match the snow on the ground. How can you have the same snow look different in the same picture? Be careful with local adjustments. You may have to go back to the original shot and start the adjustments over again.

Something whacky is going on with the roof... The snow top is completely lack of detail, almost like it is completely blown out, but the other snow in the frame is gray.

The first edit has some intruding blue/green casts that are just strange.

Can you post the original file before edits?


Looks like you exposed for the sunset, and under exposed the rest of the scene. This would make a good composite or HDR... maybe you tried this? I do not know.

Thank you. I think I will start over with the original again and just go a bit easier on the sliders. I tend to get into the habit of editing all of my images the same way which can be a bit heavy handed at times. Still learning both the software and the camera so it helps to hear things like this so I pull back the reigns a bit. Thanks again.

Yes I will post the original when at my computer tomorrow. I did not try HDR but I do see how i could benefit from it here. And looking at the roof again I like this one less than the first. It is definitely blown out. Still don't know about the blue/green cast ? Might be do to pushing too far in post ?

Definitely feel the foreground was underexposed. A filter and tripod would have helped here. Any further thoughts or suggestions welcome. Thanks for the help
