You should try to actually show the shape of the horse by isolating it's silhouette.
At first I thought it was a tree.

Merging can be distracting in a "normal" photo but in a silhouette it's 10x worse.

I like the orange hue throughout but I feel like my eyes have to work too hard to make out the horse

It might, if you are trying for a true silhouette, but...it would look a lot better if it didn' t look like he has a tree limb growing out of this head. A true silhouette is just that - an outline of a subject against some form of light source - nothing else should be part of the silhouette, unless it is there to compliment it and add to the "composition"
