Sunset on the reservoir

For about a week, here in the Boston area we had some pretty decent sunsets... I set out to the reservoir, thinking there would be one...here is what I got, not anywhere near what had been earlier in the week... But, I do like the open water area and hope there will be some nice reflections.

How could this kind of lens flare happen? Or did you add the circle afterwards.
I love sunsets seen across water. The texture of the water comes out ever so nicely in the second photo.

Actually, I did not really have time to set up in the manual mode...I wanted to shoot at ISO 100 etc... the lens flare was natural..no filter...usually I do not like it...seemed ok this time.
Also, there are a lot of geese in this area...a small group is actutally visible almost at the water line in the 2nd photo. I was waiting for a group to fly in front of the sun, but, this night, they stayed put or flew off to the east...
