I like the concept and execution but I think the type of chair hurts the photo. The type of chair causes everything to become a tangled mess too quickly. A material with a bit more depth would have made it stand out a bit more.

I know what you mean, but I don't think it's so bad in this shot. I tried quite a few different shots all around the courtyard and the "look" of the tables/chairs was always something I was dealing with when testing different angles of view.
All the other elements fit in this shot - pillars, brickwork, wall, tones - so the table structure was less important.

If I told you I pulled the chair out myself, would it change your opinion any?
It bothers me a bit. I have this weird aversion to changing the environment. Don't know where it comes from, considering how much I edit things in post.

There is nothing wrong in changing the placement of things to create an image. Directing a model, adding and modifying light, post processing, cropping, ... all are actions taken by the photographer to create an image.

Had you been photographing a scene for evidentiary documentation then I'd understand your reluctance.

If the chair was positioned uniform with the other chairs in succession, I think I would've liked it better. The position of the front chair creates a lot of visual tension, for me.
