The idiom is a metaphor for the common behaviour of responding disproportionately to something - usually an adverse circumstance. One who "makes a mountain out of a molehill" is said to be greatly exaggerating the severity of the situation. In cognitive psychology, this form of distortion is called magnification. The term is also used to refer to one who has dwelled on a situation that has long passed and is therefore no longer significant.

There was a small group of people bound and determined to change everybody here to fit into a small box of conformity. Lots of finger pointing and hypocritical behavior by these people lead to the recent rash of mass thread closings, and caused quite the disruption of the normal state of the forum. Drama queens, basically.

One left in a huff and blizzard of drama. And like magic, the forum is a happier place again. Oddly, and contrary to the beliefs of that person (I use the term loosely, because her behavior was more like that of a nervous chuahua) that we were the root of the problem, it turns out she was.

Another member has calmed down after behaving exactly like those they were pointing fingers at. Funny how that works, eh?

I agree...Finger Pointing (along with whining and back-biting) is really big these days....I'm having trouble finding just the right piece of clip-art to illustrate my back at ya finger point response in return. Mmmm...yeah.
