They're both decent enough hobby zooms. Neither has vibration reduction though.

Hey I AM OFF TO China to see terracotta army and the great wall do you reckon these will be good enough for that.. Thanks for taking the time to reply

I have the d5100 and had checked every worthwhile review and and lens comparision I could find..I suggest that is the best place to see the features, and preformance of these lens. I decided to go with the newest version Nikon 70-300 .This is a great lens..Got it shipped 415.00 from Canada Amazon.com: Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: NIKON: Camera & Photo

Thank you so much for that its a lil out of my price range at the moment, I may see if i can get a used one.. Thank you :) .. Hope you had a good day

Sure, outdoors in daylight, they'll be plenty fine. Though in that sort of situation I might prefer the 18-105, so I don't have to change lenses. As is, you'll have to switch lenses most likely, as 70mm on a crop frame will be a bit tight for some shots.

Thanks peeps they are so wxonsive I don't any to mess up

Is this the only lens you will have or, will you have a 18-55 kit lens as well?

The second lens you listed will not AF with the D5100. The first lens isn't too bad for the price. I used to have one, but make sure it has the built in focus motor, otherwise it won't autofocus either on the D5100... These are from almost 2 years ago, I sold the lens a long time ago... Tamron 70-300 Di Ld with a D5000...
