Playing with lighting from below. Nothing brilliant, but CC always welcome.

^^ can anyone else confirm this softness? The subject is a cheap miniature, the print quality isn't very good, but I also shot at f:32, which is prob too small an aperture.

Did I miss the focus on this one?

Also, what are your thoughts RE the placement of the specular over the teapot? Should I have moved the key further back, perhaps provided some diffuse or used a grid?

At f/32 your shots will always be a bit softer. Most lenses produce their sharpest images in the f/5.6 - f/8 range with most being good across f/4 - f/11. The medium/size/style of your image will determine what is too soft and what is not. At f/32 I doubt you could miss focus so diffraction will be your softness.

As for the shot, not a huge fan of the lighting becuase the tea cup is so dark compared to the underside of the saucer...
It feels a little cramped at the bottom for my liking in terms of composition as well.

Yes, as Tyler mentioned, shooting at F32 is likely to cause a loss of sharpness over shooting at a more 'premium' aperture like F8-F11.
I also agree that the lighting looks uneven because the rim of the cup is preventing the front from getting much light.

I don't like the angle you shot this at. It flattens the scene, I like a higher perspective so we could get a better feel for the shape and position of the cup & pot.

As I said, my objective was lighting from below, so I was a bit limited in my angle. I didn't want a brilliant white backdrop. Not saying it works as a finished image - no excuses intended, just given the parameters of the exercise, the angle was limited.

As for the teacup being too dark, I think you guys are right. I tried to provide some bounce, but it was not adequate. I should have tracked down a my vivitar speedlight I have buried somewhere...
