Great use of the available lighting, and I really like your black and white conversion. I do wish the crop wasn't so tight, and I might suggest the smallest amount of burning on the noses, that way they aren't the brightest focal point of their faces. My eyes go straight to their noses first before looking anywhere else. Typically when I'm photographing someone with a hat, I'll have them just slightly raise their chin so that there's enough light in the eyes to make up for the shade of the brim.

I figured it was due to something like that. Too much background clutter is worse than a tight crop, agreed!
