You can post an image however large you want, but the forum software will resize the link...and whether it does a good job resizing the link is anybody's guess. A general rule of thumb is 800 pixels on the long end for posting to forums...

If you want, add a link where they can see the full size image.

I just started using this site and found out flickr has a cool way of adding their "BBcode". Look into that too.
