...or the thing with the bright flood-like lights behind the subject...I dunno what it's called...did I get it right?

this thread will get plenty of attention

I'd say you've done very well!

Backlighting is nice on both. Good balance I think. I tend to like this type of portrait though. As long as their faces arent noticeably darker and balanced with some fill I enjoy it. I think you did well on both.

This type of lighting requires a delicate attention to detail IMO and probably more difficult to pull off than most portrait types. While your style may be to have bright backgrounds, you should consider that a portrait is an effort to showcase your subject. Therefore, the brightest portion of the image should be the subjects face with specific focus on the eyes. That doesn't mean the background can't be bright as well, but the viewer should be drawn into the image with your model's face, first and foremost.

Lovely models. Thanks for sharing.

I like them. I would probably add a warning in the title (in regards to pic #2) for those of us at work :-P.

Fantastic pics! Can you tell us a bit more about how you handled the lighting?

i love the first pic. im not to fond of the second picture not because of the picture itself but cause i cant stop looking at her hair

nice pictures, but the best i like the first one

Neiby - the first image was shot around 7:30pm ish when the sun was just about to set...I was sitting with my back to the sun...had my 5 in 1 reflector (silver side) next to the BF who was shooting...eye level with me...(camera settings are on flickr)...me trying not to squint with the silver reflection straight in my eyes... :o)

The second image was taken indoors about 2 or 3 in the afternoon...with my two cheap umbrellas (shoot through) set about 7 feet in front of the model and about 10 feet apart...just slightly behind me...light set on low...

Love #1.. very, very nice.

#2 lighting is good.. face could use a bit less shadow, but overall an attractive shot. Hair is a bit much...not very natural "bedroom" hair (too much hairspray or something), which is what I assume you were going for?

Edit: Nice blog too! :)
