There is a not surprising tradition of French food in Laos that requires some real effort to maintain. This bakery imports wheat from somewhere far south and puts out some amazing croissants.

The owner spoke fairly good English and, when I told him that we often called bagels Jewish donuts he laughed as hard as I've ever seen a Lao laugh.
We stopped in the next day for an afternoon snakc and he offered me a Jewish donut but I settled for an excellent slice of cheesecake.
Having cheescake, croissants and bagels was an almost surreal experience that far from any Western city = or any big city at all.

I'm fascinated that all of the signs at the bakery are in English. Why is that?

This cafe, and a couple of restaurants in the town, cater to Western travelers.
I never saw a Lao person at any of these restaurants; they tend to eat and lounge in the area of the day or night markets
