What's new

The Coffee House

I'm back home. I had a nice drive, decent weather, even if a bit chilly. No fishing as the larger creeks were a bit murky. The Jeep did get her belly wet a few times; nothing deep or wide but still fun. I will definitely going back.

No pics along the forest roads this time but I got a couple at one of my favorite places in the state: the Interstate 68 cut through Sidling Hill.

Busy day today. Took my mom out for breakfast then we went to bjs and the grocery store to stock up for the next few weeks. Then I took the pup for a long walk at the local conservation area aka “the Fells”, Next up I pruned all of the rose bushes - 13 of them so that took a bit. Followed that up by making some chicken wire cages to cover the emerging cone flower plants to save them from the bunnies - it’s been Watership Down over here the past few weeks! Now I am couching it. Looking forward to falling asleep to a good book.

The last eclipse we traveled south and it was terrible traffic going back home. This year we were on the fence about driving to the totality area. Just south of us 10 miles is 96%. We may drive to a cemetery or a parking lot to view. I still have the commemorative glasses from last time.

People around here are going nuts about seeing the eclipse. I think part of it is that this time of year New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine tourism is pretty slow because ski season is over and summer season hasn’t started yet. So this is a huge opportunity for them to sell out the hotels and book up all the Airbnb sites. They did a ton of advertising. People are charging $1000 a room at some of the motels. And everything is sold out. It is going to be a **** show of epic proportions trying to get up there and then get home. There’s not enough money in the world for me to even consider being part of that mess.

Yeah - not excited about the eclipse; I've seen them. We are going to be something like 80% or 85%. there weren't glasses, then. We just put a pinhole in a piece of paper and watched the show on whathever the sun shined on through the hole. I also saw one (quite unexpectantly) as a reflection in a car windshield. I'll just look at the shots at NASA's web site.

Arc Welder's glass with rating of #14 shade will work as well. Probaby cheaper and easier to get.

It may be that the evaporator fan isn't working, and needs replacing, which may cost less than a new fridge. The fan pulls the a chilled air from the freezer and circulates it through the rest of the fridge.
The fans running its blowing into the freezer and a little into the back of the fridge that i can feel, and ive got the fridge turned right up full and its only barely keeping it at 5C.

Took the back panel off and the coil isnt frozen.

Just seems like the compressor isn't firing up as much now, nah it's 1 year shy of 2 decades old so yeah time for a new one Mr.

Thanks for your reply too🤙...

Thats US$1000😱, think a patch of flat ground and a swag would suffice. Get back home and spend some of the $1000 on plants hey, minus fuel and food costs.

You in the path of the full eclipse?

Not where we live but about 3 hours ride north. Northern New England is also looking to be the only area where skies should be clear.

On the local news they reported signs up on the highways about traffic. We may just watch from the back field or drive the back roads to the watershed center where we walk often. The total eclipse in 2017 was amazing, but the people who's car lights came on sorta ruined it. The traffic home was terrible.

For a $1000 a night I will throw in breakfast and a packed lunch.

Happy Eclipse day, hosers! It will all be over in a couple of hours.

We're in a 99.2% path of totality. After several days of hearing what a washout it would be, it's virtually cloudless out there. :icon_sunny:

A local sense of humor:

 I admit, this one will be fun. I even have glasses. The last eclipse happened when we were still in Georgia, and I think we had about 70 or 80% path of totality, and it was still quite noticeable.

Helpful tips for a safe eclipse viewing experience:

The people of Texas may have the best view but will also be the first to be sacrificed.

Animals may behave strangely. If your dog or cat speaks to you, heed its dire warning.

Don't trust the squirrel with the child's face. It speaks only lies.

When your double arrives, resist the inclination to fight it. It may be stronger than you. Chances are it will disappear after the eclipse. Be careful it doesn't switch places with you, it will be a few decades before you get the chance to come back.

If you stare into the void, and it blinks first, you win. But the prize is insanity.

Werewolves are not only impossible to kill during an eclipse, they become SUPER WEREWOLVES.

Whatever you do don't buy any weird plants, we don't want a repeat of last time.

Apophis, the Moon Serpent, may try to eat you. Let him.

If once upon a time you were falling in love, but now you're only falling apart, there's nothing you can do. This a different type of total eclipse...

I tried to get some shots with my 18-400mm lens. The clouds actually parted at just the right time, and I put a variable ND filter on the camera, up to ND400, and that worked nicely. Unfortunately, the barrel doesn't lock except at 400mm, and that was too much magnification for a crips image, and without the lock, the lens insisted on creeping back, so I got images, but not crisp ones. I can actually see the solar flares jumping. Just have to figure out how to best process the images now.

That's exciting! So glad you were able to get a peek and snap some photos.
