i did this once too, but by the time i could get my lens cap off, he bolted!

Actually, he heard me first and was already running away. At first this made me happy because I was alone and about 30 miles from anyone or anything other than forest. But then I thought, get the camera up, no chance, he was gone and he was big too, or maybe my eyes were big!

From what I see this is just a dead tree slowly being recycled into soil for the other trees, no cruelty.
