Well, it looks to me like you just discovered the vignette tool in your editing program. You use a very heavy vignette, a four to five or six stop level,on most of your black-and-white pictures. As I said, I think you might want to rethink your use of the vignette as such an integral part of so many of your black and white photos.

It reminds me of early pinhole photos where the edges were underexposed.

The heavy vignette certainly draws the eye to the center of the picture and gives it a nice old timey look. So if you wanted a 1920 and 30's black and white feel I would say you have it.

The nice thing about post processing, is your imagination is the only limit.

Vignettes, like any other tool can be useful. However, if overused, they tend to distract from the rest of the image. If you want an "ole-timey" look, you could try sepia toning.

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but the overdone vignette was the first thing that jumped out at me too. Bear in mind that these are only our opinions, and I get what you were trying to do with the Grapes of Wrath feel, but I think Derrel nailed it when he wrote that it's a very heavy effect. I think a light vignette works here, but one this dark doesn't feel natural.

One effect of vignetting (besides the old-timey feel) is to darken the periphery in order to bring the eye towards the center of the image, and I think in this case that does this shot a disservice. The vignette does effectively draw my eye to the centered silo. However, what I like most about this shot is that you have some great converging lines going right-to-left. The tops of the silos, the apex of the barn roof, and the rear top corner of the truck's trailer are fairly well aligned; ditto for the bottoms of those four. Without the vignette drawing attention away from the truck and the large silo (by the way, I like the most dominant feature - the large silo - being positioned off center), those lines would really work to make the four items work well together in a comprehensive scene.

Sepia toning is often associated with old pictures but that is really not the case. Many old photos, even those dating form the civil war era are just plain black and white. Certainly by the 1920s and 30's sepia was used for effect, as was colorizing but it was not always the case.

Then as now the intent of the photographer is not always known. I have attached a studio photo of my uncle from 1930. It has several features that I consider interesting, One would assume that as a studio print, it was released the way the professional photographer intended it to be.

However,

• The photo shows high contrast.
• I does have a light sepia tint, probably to tone down or enhance facial features.
• The backgrounds has been bokehed or more likely intentionally painted like that.
• The bottom fourth of the portrait show very heavily vignetting. The upper portion has none.

There is of course no way to know the effects of age on an almost 90 year old photograph. But it is safe to say that todays views of a proper portrait have changed.

I have some from the late 1800's. The tint you're seeing is more a result of the chemicals used.

Interesting read. Though they are talking about film, I think the same can be said for digital. Just because your camera is capable of incredible dynamic range doesn't mean some images aren't better served processing with less. "Image Quality" vs. "Quality Image" if you will. You do need a certain level of artistic ability to be able to know what to do and when to do it of course. I suppose that's why these filters are so popular, though I'm not really a fan of them myself. Too often they are applied poorly and for questionable effect. More often than not it's an exercise in making a mediocre image seem more than it actually is.

Post Processing is like beer, everybody has there favorite and some do not like it at all.

Given the fact that post processing is so widely used, the amount "necessary" is dependent upon the photographer. Even Ansell Adams tinkered with his photos until he was happy.

I do not believe there is a universally bad or good photo. Photographs may be technically wrong but still express the photographers desires.
