I wanted to clarify my statement a bit and explain why I said it.
Most people, when they take pictures of other people, use the best lighting they can and pose the people in flattering poses. There is nothing wrong with that. But when I look at your pictures, I sense a life story. Like your subway shot. In any other pose, he would have looked like someone in a costume. You took the picture in such a way, that it conveys a very interesting life behind the picture, at least in my eyes. I've looked through your portfolio and get that same sense. You don't use the normal photography conventions to get your shot. And your shots are more powerful, at least to me because of it.
My "kid" is 23. He has a huge passion for life, for those around him and he's a wonderful person. But he's often (always) judged because he looks different. He wears a hat with ears (and there is a very powerful story behind the hat too), he has dreads, he doesn't look like what society thinks a "normal" 23 year should look like. Whenever we are out together, I see the stares. Funny enough, it's the under 30 crowd that stares. The elderly seem to adore him. He is an extremely good person, loves people, is polite, well spoken, he's just "different" in appearance. This is the kid who when 18, came and spent the weekend with me in a tiny town, with no internet and no cable, just to watch a harry potter marathon with him mom. And spend mother's day every year with me letting me photograph him to my hearts content. Because he loves me and he knew that would make me happy.
The reason I said I would love for you to shoot him, is because I think that you would *get* that difference in him and portray it in a photograph. You would be able to do shots in a way that show his personality and him the way he really is. His "life story" beind the picture. So yes, if you are *ever* near Ontario, please let me know and if you're willing, I'd be thrilled to hire you for a small photoshoot with him.
