Really cute shot! Was it low ap? The dog is spot on, but the little boy is ever so soft. A little shapening will fix that though.
I like the shot as it is, but experiment with crops. I'm a big "chop the tops of the heads off" cropping person when I see emotional shots. I want to go to the guts of it. Play with that and see if you like it.

Portraits should be a little soft, it helps give a "loving" feel, and also helps hide skin imperfections. I definitely think you did not crop too tight, but I wouldn't go any tighter if it were mine. The bandana on the dog is such a nice touch. The only thing "negative" I would say is that portraits look soooo nice with a fast lens, this one needs more bokeh. I had this old manual 50mm f/1.4(usually set to f/2) that gave the sweetest bokeh, perfect for portraits. Anyway, it's a keeper for sure, nice job.
