Portraits should be a little soft, it helps give a "loving" feel, and also helps hide skin imperfections. I definitely think you did not crop too tight, but I wouldn't go any tighter if it were mine. The bandana on the dog is such a nice touch. The only thing "negative" I would say is that portraits look soooo nice with a fast lens, this one needs more bokeh. I had this old manual 50mm f/1.4(usually set to f/2) that gave the sweetest bokeh, perfect for portraits. Anyway, it's a keeper for sure, nice job.
