The Nifty Fifty Challenge

Ever tried to take a certain lens out on a photowalk and just that lens? Yeah, I don't do it very often either. But this one time I took out the 50mm 1.8 and walked around a harbour and challenged myself to nail a decent shot, at least one anyway. Using a ledge as a tripod (As that was left in the car too), here is the result of the challenge. Thanks for the C&C

A small aperture I would guess - OP hasn't put his EXIF information on, but I would guess at least f/11

One way to get the exif is to download the photo and then upload it to this. Jeffrey's Exif viewer

The number of rays coming out of light source is determined by the number of blades used in the aperture. The more the blades more are the number of rays. And these are clearly noticeable if aperture is small like f/22.

The 50mm 1.8 has 7 aperture blades....i counted 14 rays...how does that work...my guess would be PH.

This was taken in Oakville Ontario. 50km west of Toronto. Heard there was a great Fish & Chips spot here and was really the purpose of travelling to Oakville.

PS was not used in this photo. The Raw was converted with colour and contrast adjustments in Lr3. The star around the light is clearly visible in the Raw file.

The phenomenon is called "Sunstar Rays" and the number of rays varies in different lenses. In case of Nikon it is double the number of aperture blades. Found some info here:
