Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Winnipeg

I've visited quite a few buildings over the years, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is one of the most extraordinary buildings I've seen. It's almost impossible to describe the interior...or to photograph the experience of being in the interior of the building effectively. Walking through the museum is like undergoing a journey. You enter through the Great Hall and climb illuminated alabaster ramps from level to level. Eventually, you reach the Tower of Hope near the spire where you get a 360 degree view of the skyline. The museum is immense. There are 15,000 tiles of alabaster along the ramps...making it the biggest project ever done with that material. The building itself cost just over $350 million at the time of construction.

Photography can be a challenge. Tripods are not permitted. The interior is quite dark and is also crowded with visitors.

2- I parked across the river and walked over the pedestrian bridge when I visited the museum.

3- The building lends itself to architectural abstract images. I took some liberties in Photoshop with this one.

4- The exhibits are bright and colorful. That's one of the illuminated alabaster ramps on the left.

5- Ramps connect the various level...and if I recall correctly the museum has 8 levels.

6- Visitors often rest on benches along the way. Elevators are available for those who don't wish to climb, but the ramps certainly add to the overall experience.

7- More ramps...to capture this shot, I held my Nikon Z9 at arms length over the railing. I relied on the extended rear LCD panel to compose and focus. Image stabilization was my friend as well. Thankfully, I didn't drop the Z9 and lens multiple stories!

Most buildings that I visit prohibit tripods. I think they are concerned about people tripping over tripod legs or having photographers block walkways or easy access to the exhibits.

Thanks...I rarely include people in the frame, but did so with 7 to introduce some scale to the scene. I think I need to do that more often.

I once shot photographs at the Mall of America in Minneapolis. I asked for permission and they granted a pass for me to use my tripod. So, sometimes it can pay to ask.
