Wow perfect timing. Nice one!

Thanks but that bird fought for a while and I had time to spare.

I do wish I had known this was going to happen although I guess you can say that about pretty much all nature photography.
This was taken from pretty far away with a lens I was just playing with because it has fungus inside, 400mm with a 2x tele-converter. I had it set up on a tripod with my D7000 while I was really shooting hummingbirds from where I was sitting. In a perfect world I would have been closer and using my best stuff, my D4 and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8.

All things considered I'm happy with and surprised by the quality. If you look through that lens there is a lot of fungus inside. But I know I could have done better...

I'd say that's pretty darn good for a 800mm, fungi or not! I'm surprised it has the clarity it has with a 2x. I'd say that set-up is a keeper. Nice pic.

It has taken some shots that look quite good. But I've taken others where it put a blue tinge on things.

I'll certainly be keeping it although I don't know how much action it will see. It's so heavy a tripod/monopod is mandatory and its fully manual so I sometimes have to take a couple of test shots to get the exposure right, it doesn't always seem to agree with the indicator in my camera.
