That type of mask would be next to worthless ... please don't use it thinking that you are protected. To be honest if it truly is 20 years of crud ... the counters need to be replaced or refinished ... your time would be better spent organizing some fund raisers (ala car wash or two to collect some money for materials and making phone calls to cabinet shops or stain steel fabricators to get them to donate their expertise.)

If you still insist on cleaning the counters yourself ... I suggest a flamethrower ... quick and easy.
