I wonder if anyone ever tried the brake on the front wheel instead of the back?

If you look closely you can see brake calipers on the back wheel of the penny farthing in the 2nd image. Most likely (guessing) a modern addition to make it legal.
... and in the 1st image the trike on the right has some thing that looks like brakes on the back of the big front wheels
