If I start saving now, I may have enough to upgrade from my 1000d to the 60d by Christmas.

The 60d is a tad faster, has interchangeable viewfinder ability (and its a pentaprism not pentamirror), and might as well get the ability to shoot 24fps 1080p mov files. If anyone here reading this has had one, what are your thoughts. This 1000d is serving me quite well and will not be replaced but added to instead. I get to keep all my lenses since the adapters will still fit as it keeps the same mount obviously. The one thing I noticed is it has a different battery style, so I would have to get a few more of those as I have 3 ep5 types at the moment. It seems to me that this would be the best transition and with a little patience, easily manageable money-wise.

I have a 60D and I'm quite happy with it... The body ergonomics are much much better than the rebel series. I haven't even played much with the video capability, but the couple test shots I did were quite nice. I've upgraded the stock focusing screen to a split prism and I manually focus most of the time. The screen that comes with it is useless, but with the upgrade, manual is quite nice. I don't feel limited by the viewfinder, but still dream of the bigger one on the 5D. : ) The battery seems to last forever on this camera, perhaps especially when you don't autofocus much... but I get like ~2000 shots. I only have 2 batteries for it, and have never had to change batteries because one actually died all the way.

By Christmas the lineup may change though!

Thanks analog.universe, your words in the digital.universe have comforted me. It may seem silly, but I'm getting the most excited about the focusing screen. When I found one on the outernet I really liked, I was disappointed to find out that putting it into the 1000d is not recommended as it is not officially interchangeable. The movie thing isn't a big deal as I already have eos mov_rec...but then again, with the 60d, I'm not forced to be tethered to a 'puter...

I'm going to try and save $1,200 by Christmas (less food, more walking, less smoking) and see what's available at that time. Perhaps the price will change or a better one will become available within the price range I'm shooting for. Just looking at the body (no kit) as I have thirty lenses now. Old glass rocks and the movies I will be able to pull should look real nice.

Also saving up for the aputure trigmaster radio trigger set. I've decided to go with apurture after having a $25 remote shutter cable I bought from the place I bought the camera from fail two weeks later. I bought an aputure brand cable and it has worked for almost a year with no problems and paid only three dollars for it brand new.

May also get a few gorilla pods to hook up the flashes (if I find they work at all).

I now have a Neewer brand 5-1 reflector kit and will be getting at least one more. I have muslin and canvas backdrops already. If my flashes don't work, I may decide to buy some alienbees...they look sweet...

Are you sure you dont want a $850 5D classic? The best for the $ IMO. NO video of course. 12.1MP is perfect size too.

Unless you have your heart set on video, this will get you FF for peanuts, and cheaper than a 60d. I've been considering this instead of going with another cropped frame myself. Something to consider.

Used Canon EOS 5D Digital Camera

Well, I am interesting in using the camera for short film purposes as well. The 5D does not have live view, does it. I don't care if the camera itself has the ability to take video as I would just tether it to a laptop or something with eos mov_rec installed. It captures the live view output and if the 5D doesn't have live view, then that is a deal-breaker. But I would like the full frame so that I can actually use some of my lenses in areas where this crop frame doesn't work so well. My 28mm wide angle behaves like a 40mm...not as wide as I would like. The 5D does allow for focus screen replacement, so that's up there on the good things list. What else makes the 5D trump the 60D?

Price, full frame, and if you sell it again, you probably get your money back lol. No live view, you are correct.

Yes, this 1000d isn't worth the $600 I bought it for anymore...but it has brought me more pleasure than $600 worth of New York hookers...I should probably just save up for a CCD camera for video...
I would get the 5D but what is the price difference between a 5D and 60D? Are we talking a $300 difference or something (new)? The full frame would be cool as I could get much wider shots with the lenses I have.

Canon 1000D vs 5D

And where do I find it for $850? http://www.amazon.com/Canon-5D-Digital-Camera-Body/dp/B0007Y791C/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312577817&sr=1-2

found this used one, but I don't want a used camera necessarily: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800794684-USE/Canon_0296B002_EOS_5D_Digital_Camera.html

An $850 5D Classic would be a nice camera...especially if you like to shoot portraits and such. The image quality of 12.8 MP on a FF sensor is pretty hard to beat. The 5D Classic does not however, give you the low-ISO banding in the shadows that the newer 5D Mark II is famous for providing...so...you'd have to put up with clean, noise-free, beautiful shadow detail if you went with a 5D Classic. I'm still shooting the 5D Classic for portraits that "matter".

It is an old camera. You cant buy it new anymore. Try craigslist. Or you can even buy it from ebay but it is a little riskier and probably a little more expensive. Maybe 900-1000. I did buy mine from ebay because the seller provided a lot of photos and description.

LOLOLOL.. I went to bemidji, MN cragislist, I clicked for sale section, clicked photo/video... waaaalah! 5 items for sale!

I feel sorry for all of you who live in such a small community. Ebay is your answer.

Nikon D5100 is a good entry level camera. 16.2 mp and HD video mode.

I think part of the point is to get away from an entry level camera...and to not have to switch lens mounts.

And like someone said, the 5d hasn't been produced in like 3 years now. Ever since the mkii came out, anyway. Basically the only way to get one is used. If you buy used from B&H or Adorama, you can be reasonably sure it's still in good shape and won't be a lemon. They also provide a 30 day warranty, so if there is a serious problem, it hopefully presents itself in that time.
