Hate to be a critic, ,but here goes....

Focus is off. Not a real complimentary angle of your subject. I don't find the image of a bird drinking to be overly compelling, honestly. Foreground colors are likely accurate, but not overly pleasing. I really AM intrigued by the bird, but this isn't the photo to show him off.

Overall, not a 'keeper' in my mind, but I think you were at the right place at the right time- this just isn't the image I'd keep.

PS- Please keep shooting and posting- I may be all wet and others love it! Even if I'm not wrong, you can't progress without objective feedback. Many (and I mean MANY) of my images are lacking and I appreciate being told specifically what could be better.

I actually just saw him drinking and with me being relatively new I thought I had to get it as fast as I could, looked like a good shot but I totally agree with the comments. For now it's one of my good shots of the duck but I did feel it is utterly lacking somewhat in perspective. I'm trying to get the hang of aperture, ISO, and shutter speed but now I'm learning there's a whole composition to things like the rule of thirds which I'm going to focus on seeing more.

For this picture I wanted the duck to shine, but at the same time I wasn't too sure whether I needed a small or big amount of depth of field going so I went with f/11 on a whim.

I totally understand.

I recently posted a pic of a heron that had several flaws. Like your situation, it was the ONLY pic I had of the bird, which (by definition) made it the BEST heron pic I ever took! ;)

f/11 is bigger in the depth of field equation.

A lower number aperture can 'blur out' the background, but gives a small margin of error in capturing focus. Due to diffraction, a higher aperture can impact image quality a bit. I find many (but not all) lenses have a 'sweet spot' for image quality as to aperture.

I will definitely be around that area again so I'll definitely have plenty of opportunities to find that sweet spot in that scenario. The one thing I'm still trying to adjust is what setting I should focus on in certain situations. For the most part I've been trying everything in manual from white balance to focus. I don't really see how my pictures focus on af-s or af-c.

I am trying to teach my brother photography as well. If you have questions, feel free to pm me. I'm sure you two are on the same playing field. What brand camera so you shoot
