There is surely painful venom connected to those spikes. This guy might be quite stoned as he's feeding on the highly psychoactive plant Brugmansia.

Interesting creature. Typically, caterpillar spikes are more for show than actual defense. Bright coloration is for defense. The color announcing that something is nasty under the war paint. But both in one species, I think is a bit unusual. Must be a very competitive environment.
