Obviously this doll is more cooperative than a real baby would be :) but what I'm working on here is lighting. I have a 430ex II that is mounted on camera and I set this up with a white foam core board on one side for bouncing the flash and a reflector on the other side for fill.

I think it looks pretty good except that I should have chosen a different color blanket seeing as this one is pretty much the same color as the baby doll. I would love your opinions on any mistakes I'm not seeing. Thank you!

Background. Not working for a soft little baby.

Maybe its just my eyes... But the skin tone... it looks kinda yellow/oramge to me.

Hmmm, you may be right, I'm just not seeing it. Then again, I have a really old crappy monitor. I tried to calibrate it but it's too old to do most of what the program was asking me to do - like set the color temp.

I think it's really cool that you are practicing your lighting and shooting!

Anywhoo, here's a little CC I hope will help you with your practice:

1. Your white balance is a bit too warm and a bit too yellow. I'm not sure what you have to correct this in the way of processing, but if you don't have something to help you white balance, consider moving the baby setup to a window with soft morning or evening light.

2. Watch your background. See how it's cut because of the wooden wall? In this case, you might want to use a stepladder and shoot down, or bring the blanket part up. (I shoot a lot of infants on mom and dad's couch, and hopefully you can't tell by the photos).

3. The blanket works and doesn't work. I think if the color was corrected, the blanket being close to skintone might work.

Keep at it. Again, I think it's wonderful that you are putting a lot of effort into learning.

Thank you so much. I do have photoshop (elements 9 and CS5) so I can work on white balance, I'm just finding it difficult with my monitor not really being fine tuned. Is this better?
