Nice; it would have been worth using something to (reflector, speedlight) to bring a bit of fill light onto the stems, and maybe removign some of the detritus as well.

It's not bad! I would have chosen a diffent angle though. From my experience the angle is one of those things that either makes or breaks a good composition.
Always try to get on the same level as your subject, even if that means laying down on the floor It makes the image much more interesting! Not only can you show more of the mushroom than just the hat that way, it also gives you the opportunity for a more interesting background.
In your case the ground is also the background. But the ground usually isn't very interesting. If you get on the same level as the shrooms your background is further away, that makes for a more blurry background and gives you more subject isolation.
An angle like that would also make the mushrooms look less small.

Also, the two images I have seen from you seem to be a little blurry. Hard to tell if it's missed focus or camera shake. Try to get a faster shutter speed through a slightly higher ISO, a faster shutter speed usually fixes issues like that^^
