I can't speak for these three particularly but the situation around the lake was a bit in trouble.
There had been a drought and the lake was low, the tributaries even lower, meaning that people couldn't get to various markets by boat and business was down.
It is hard to explain just how tough their lives are routinely.
In the third world, people live closer to, and are more affected by, nature, an implacable unsympathetic force.

a few steps to the left and you lose all facial features of the woman in red. you would only see the back of her head, which in my opinion, would have lessened this photo greatly. a few steps to the right, and the woman with the red bags face would have been obscured by the woman on the right, thus, lessening this photo as well.
for this particular shot, I think any other position than where it was shot would not have made as good an image. just my 2 cents though....

Shooting in these places is sort of catch as catch can and I don't get to maneuver very much.

IMO positioning is correct as pixmedic said. The overall image impact and story is well recorded, I think.
