Maybe you guys can mess with it and then tell what you did and why

LOL ... too much darkness on the bottom. I'd crop to a bit below the crevice in the rocks. Just a suggestion, but ... if that rock is near you, I'd go back and reshoot it with a long lens with a big aperture. The setting sun is the key element in the shot, the rocks add a very nice framing and general location element. A longer lens with a big aperture would greatly enhance and enlarge the sun.

I wish I lived in Carlsbad.

I like what you said, I'm going to test drive a couple lens here shortly.

That spot is very close to me, we walk that beach almost every night.

We moved to Carlsbad about two months ago from our boat that we lived on for 13 yrs in Shelter Island. Not real crazy about living on land but Carlsbad and the surrounding areas south are beautiful and very photogenic.

I think I still agree with you, Had the tide been out a little more I could have framed it up a little better with the crevice ( as you suggested ) using what I had. As it was, when it ebbed I would step in and take the shot then haul butt before the flow, a fast mid range lens would have been ideal me thinks and my feet would have stayed drier
