[TD="class: alt1"]This is my first attempt at time lapse photography using my kids as subjects.

Hopefully I uploaded it correctly. The music is Cherryholmes 'Sumatra' song.

I used my Canon Rebel 300D with a 28mm-80mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. It kept refocusing since I didn't but it on the manual setting .... I'm still learning.

I was thinking of getting a different lens to use for these. Any suggestions? Was looking into the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 .... just to have a wider angle view and a faster lens .... these kids are quite mobile.

I'm just curious I don't know much about time lapse photography... couldn't you just take a video and pull out a bunch of images and put them together? Or is that what it is?

You have to take multiple pictures and put them together. The best thing to use to put them together is adobe premiere elements.

Ok I've seen it done like that on TV but I guess what I don't understand is why can't you just take a video and pull out a frame every second or something... it's probably cheating but isn't it the same final product?

The point is to make a time-lapse video using individual pictures. Taking video completely removes the whole point. The goal is a series of identically exposed pictures taken to express movement and a story.

There's also a difference in storage space, since you're not taking 20hrs of high definition video but a picture every couple of minutes for 20hrs.

I understand the point, but could you tell the difference if I pulled shots from a video feed? With clay it makes sense to move the hand out of the way. But with a moving scene to me it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Thanks- I was looking at the 24mm f/2.8 as well. I was curious about the 17-50mm f/2.8 just so I would have a lens with a few more options, but I was looking at the 24mm as well.

@shootermcgavin- perhaps it would make more sense to you if it were a time lapse of something that moved slower like clouds across the sky or a flower blooming? I was trying to make a whimsical piece placing consecutive photos together at a fast pace to play off the fast pace of having small children. http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/members/104551.htmlIt's a creative way to use photography and fun to do. :-)
