Time sure goes fast these days

Contrary to early predictions from all who know me, I haven't put my daughter in front of the camera all that much since she was born. I imagine it is in part because I have wanted to be more present when I'm with her, but also, and quite probably, because I'm too exhausted all the time for post processing... Recently she has become a bit more independant and is clearly creating a whole world of imagination around herself. It gives me some time to step back and take a photo or two every now and again. Today she was immersed in her world, probably imagining the refrigerator magnets are farm animals on her imaginary farm.

Very nice! I’m glad you’re spending time in the moment instead of recording the moment. They are all consuming at that age. Carving out even a minute or two for your photos is an accomplishment.

As far as having time for post processing, I highly recommend finding a camera with settings that give you what you want in jpeg so you can spend less time on that!

I'd encourage you to capture as many of these moments as possible. I now have children who are approaching 50 and going back to images taken when they were young is very pleasant. These moments are fleeting and once gone are lost forever.

Oh what sweetheart! I bet she already has Dad wrapped around her fingure. Just keep the camera close and realize they have their own little personality. Just like adults sometimes they don't want their picture taken and sometimes they'll reward you with the memory shots.

Thank you! I have found I am shooting jpeg more than I ever have before. I actually like the jpeg's my D800 produces. What I do sometimes is shoot raw, then the two or three of the ones I want to keep I have the camera process into jpeg. It encourages me not to keep dumping tons of photos onto my hard drive that I'm not going to do anything with...

Thanks OldManJim. I am certainly trying. My dad was pretty good with a camera when we were growing up and as a result we have some great childhood photos. My wife in contrast has maybe five or ten photos from her childhood that are even in focus.. I recently got him set up with the Nikon ES-2 slide copier so he could digitize the hundreds and hundreds of slides he has dating from Vietnam through our late childhood. It's fun to look back and see them.

I love both because they are non-smiling photos. My daughter tells her girls to smile and I say no don't. There is room for both types.
