This is fascinating! Do you think a similar concept could work outside Japan? Maybe in places with a strong jazz culture, like New Orleans or Paris?

The concept doesn't seem to travel well. These are listening bars. Not intended for socializing, dancing, or loud behavior. Groups aren't seen. Around Toronto, patrons too often shouted or talked loudly, arrived drunk, or made music requests. As friends said, that the customers weren't Japanese seemed to be the problem.
