is this a much better lense than other non-prime WA lenses? pricey, but that being said....his mother isnt worth too much in the grand scheme of things if only for 2k.

Yes!

For one thing most of those zooms aren't full frame. 13mm full frame is ridiculously wide, and with almost zero distortion.
