I was able to get on the sideline of my youngest brothers high school football intra-squad scrimmage... Took alot of shots, choose these 3... The first two because they have action, the last one because I like the repetition of the players.

I cropped this down from the larger image. I would have like to have captured less shadow in the #85's face

Cropped this down also. If I had a chance to reshoot this, I would have took it with the sun to my back

With these, I would try to split the difference on background exposure and facial exposure. While the shadows might be persistent under the helmet, you still want to be able to see the faces with some exposure. And finally, I always try to choose shots where I can see action AND the face of the player who is the subject of my shot. So in the first shot, if my subject is the ball-handler, I would want to be able to see his face. If the subject is the defender, then I would wait until he made the tackle until I snapped the photo (although I might bite my tongue with that advice because the jump/hands in the air is probably enough action).

Thanks for the advice....

How do you go about splitting the difference in background and facial exposure?
