I got her to sit for me again. Changed background. Showing hand. Took the feedback and wanted to try it again. Thoughts? Is it an improvement?

It could be called an improvement, at least for the position of the prop.

Use vertical (portrait) orientation.
Modify your flash to be less harsh.
Ask your model to look at the lens and attempt a smile.
Move your light a bit to the front.
Move your model away from the backdrop.
Focus on her eye.
When you post a shot, click on "full size". (The preferred size is about 1,000 pixels on the longest side.)

There was no flash.

The frown was on purpose as the look I was going for was more sad than happy. Also part of dark to one side, light to the other. To my untrained eye, I thought I did well with that, but I'm sure it could be improved as well.

Other than that, I'll certainly look to improve next time.
