Tuition Increase

Last week, the CSUS board of trustees proposed a 2.5% increase in tuition. Today, CCSU President Jack Miller told the Student Government Association just how big (or small) the increase really is.

Please C&C...My problem was deciding to go with a close crop, or keep the flag in its entirety in the background...thoughts? This will probably go front page...so I need some insight.

Go with the close crop, especially if it's going on the front page.

The flag makes it a little busy, and you want everyone to focus on the pinch. Besides, with a close crop you'll get the impression that there's a flag in the background anyways because of the coloring.

Yep close crop, otherwise you'll end up with too much empty space over his head. Nice shot.

Make your image smaller. It takes too long to load.

That said, I would keep this image as is. With a tighter crop you may have too weird a background. If you have a different image, a tighter crop could be nice.

However, I have never cropped an image for publication. The photo editor or the editor (in a smaller publication) decides that kind of thing.

The only real downside to a crop is that you will end up with a fairly square image. Most photo editors that I've worked with don't like using squares or having empty space.

It depends on the layout of the particular paper. If have a sidebar running down the left side like a lot of papers in my area do a square is perfectly fine. If you're going to blow this picture up really huge it'll either be covering a lot of the top fold, or the entire front page if your paper is a tabloid instead of a broadsheet). I guess what I'm trying to say is that when you're dealing with large newspaper graphics it's easier to work with things that are squares, or slightly horizontal and rectangular than it is to use long, vertical portraits.

True it is all based on the format of the paper. When I have shot for the wire services, squares were almost against the rules. Now the wire services are looking for more horizontal images for web uses, it's just the changing times with news and the internet.

I agree with you there. When I started laying out newspapers everything was structured, with boxes and dedicated columns and gutters with the occasional pull quote and bar graph. Now, everything is moving more towards a magazine-style layout. I for one welcome the change. Newspapers have become kinda stuffy, and if they want to be around much longer they're going to have to make a lot of changes, which includes the way they think about how a paper should look.

Its very noisy for 1000iso was it underexposed

I always post the original size, and I think when the forum's built in photo resizing resizes my photo it makes it noisier...

Here's the medium size on flickr, I think it looks less noisy now.
