Twitter has enabled me to completely change how I consume and discover news and information and has been a HUGE timesaver. I follow vendors, competitors, thought leaders, and some media within my industry, allowing me to cancel out of all email newsletters and most RSS feeds that I used to subscribe to. With just a few minutes of scanning my Twitter feed a couple times per day, I'm completely caught up on everything that has happened within my industry that impacts my specific job, and if any tweet contains a link to a longer story that I want to read, I just favorite it and go back to it when it's more convenient.
It's like taking all of the articles in the newspaper that you were going to read anyway, chopping them down into a super cliff notes version, and putting them all on the front page so you can get rid of everything else. You get all of the information that you were going to get anyway, but you're able to spend much less time consuming it. Sounds like a valuable tool to me!
Same goes for personal stuff like breaking news, weather, sports news, etc. All through Twitter.
Twitter gets a bad rap from people that think it's nothing more than gossip and pointless status updates. I use it as the single source to get all the news that I was going to read anyway, just in a much more condensed, convenient, and easy to consume format.
