Two landscapes for your C&C

Although I have been taking landscapes for decades, I have not been doing so with what you might call a photographer's eye. I picked out these two that I like for various reasons, and I would like any comments and criticisms.

The first is a windswept pine tree at Porthloo in the Isles of Scilly. Porthloo is a bay facing the Atlantic and does get the prevailing winds! Taken with a Panasonic Bridge camera at f/6.7, 1.250, ISO100.

The second was taken in Alderney, in the Channel Islands (the ones off the coast of France). It is one of my 'Tulgey Wood' shots, that remind me of the poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. This was taken using my Canon Powershot SX260 HS for the first time. f/3.5, 1/30, ISO 100.

To me, these are just snapshots that you saw while walking your dog and thought was cool.

No real thought went into planning the shot.

The perspective is just like I'm standing there, so its not really interesting.



Time of day is the most important factor in doing landscapes, it may be 6am, it may be 6pm. It all depends, but I would suggest visiting the same location 2-3 times before even taking the photo and seeing what looks best.

I agree with Sean, they look like snapshots. But I think what struck you are the garishness of the tree branches. The first one is dead center while the second one wraps around you. If so then this may be one time where garish photoshop effects and filters might do the trick, that is, make them striking to us viewers, too.

Thanks for that, It confirms what I said at the introduction to my post. So far, I have regarded my photos as recording what I see on visits, rather than deliberately seeking out shots and composing them. The two I posted are limited in where I could take them from, both were on a narrow path. I am rarely in a position to visit a site at different times to see what looks best. I hope to be reading up on composition over the next month, so we'll see if I can improve.
