Understanding layers

Can someone show me a tutorial they used maybe to learn layers. Unfortunetly layers are still a mystery to me and I'd like to finally start using them since it sounds like that makes a picture alot of the time. Thanks guys!

Layers are one of those things that I always knew I needed to underdstand better but have not got around to. I borrowed a book from the library a while back and jumped straught to the layers section to learn how to do what I needed, but then forgot most of what it taught me hehe
